4.0    Shrink Wrapping

4.1    Shrink Wrapping Example

Shrink wrap Finished Sheets and include the cost of the shrink wrap film.

Specifications:

Wrap 500 sheets per package at a rate of 120 packages/hour. Shrink wrap film based on cost per linear inch (film purchased in a roll of 2000 ft. in length x 16 inches wide.

4.1A Shop Standards (Shrink Wrapping Example)

The setups in Standards for the Shrink Wrapping Example are shown in following screens.

Figure 4.1-1

Shrink Wrap Example, Postpress Process

Comments (Fig. 4.1-1):

1.  Setup is based on 500 finished sheets / package. Alternately, the process could be based on package depth. For this, set “Inches/cycle” and the system would calculate sheets/package based on the stock caliper.

2.  Rate is 120 packages per hour.

Shrink Wrap Example, Shop Standards, Material

Comments:

1.  Assumption: 2000 ft. of shrink-wrap film x 16 inches wide = $75.00.  Cost per  linear inch = $0.003, however, material used when shrink-wrapping a package will      be approximately 2.5 x the package dimension = $0.0075.

2.  Could set up on a cost per square inch basis.

4.1B Estimating/Order Entry (Shrink Wrapping Example)

The screen displays in Estimating/Order Entry for the Shrink Wrapping Example follow:

Comment (Fig. 4.1-3):

Shrink wrap material calculation will be based on “Untrim / Sig Flat” size – ‘across cylinder’ (W) x ‘around cylinder’ (L). Material in the shrink wrapping example will    use the “L” dimension.

4.1C Estimating/Order Entry (Shrink Wrapping Example) – Analysis Report

The analysis report for the Shrink Wrapping Example follows:

Figure 4.1-5

Shrink Wrap Example, Estimating/Order Entry, Analysis Report

Comments (Fig. 4.1-5):

1. Packages =10000 sheets/500 per package = 20.

2. Labor: 20 packages x 0.5 min. each + 10 min. set up = 20 min. = 0.33 hrs.

3. Matl: 20 packages x 8.5 in. (L) = 220 in. @ $0.0075 per linear inch = $1.65
